What
There is this RAIN method from the book “The Craving Mind”. It’s an interesting idea to detox and to break bad habits. It’s actually very similar to a long-held idea I found - once something becomes your job, the level of motivation drops.
Why and How
Behind the scene, it seems that “feeling” and “logic” are two areas in our brain. They are competing. And the feeling part is one of the key components to keep us craving for something. The RAIN idea is the following steps
- Recognize/Relax
- Accept
- Investigate
- Note
The steps taken here is to “analyze” the “feeling”. To start analyzing the feeling, the first step is to accept its existence. And investigating the feeling is pivoting our energy from “feeling” to “logic”. And logic makes us lose the feeling.
It’s the same for work. If anything becomes work, we need to apply more logic than feeling. Unfortunately, this reduces our level of excitement.
What’s next
So to break the bad habit is to visualize the feeling, analyze it.
The untold story is how to be motivated? Maybe the reverse is true that we shouldn’t have too much logics in how many steps/minutes we should put into workout, but care about the good feeling :)
